The 2020 Mid-year Review

The 2020 Mid-year Review

Real talk, 2020 has been challenging for everyone. Even if you are not dealing with anything too major in your personal life, you have probably partaken in the collective grief we have all gone through in the past few months. From the death of Kobe and Gianna Bryant in January and the global COVID-19 pandemic around March, to George Floyd’s death and its repercussions recently.

This got me thinking. how did I start the new year, again? Was it all bad from the beginning? What are my hopes going into the second half of 2020?

I started 2020 in Brooklyn, New York, watching my favorite band playing my favorite songs at the Barclays Center. Shortly after, I went to a bar in Williamsburg, where I met Julian Casablancas in person! From 2 AM to 4 AM, I danced with strangers and had a good time. I even met Post Malone and Mac DeMarco! It was definitely an epic night.

There was this sense of liberation and fun that I had not felt in a long time, that night. It felt like anything was possible.

Not ALL bad. It’s easy to focus on the negative. And trust me, in my personal life, there were a TON of negative/challenging/difficult stuff that I had to go through since January. However, there are some great things too!

My friend Wina Wilanisa and I put these questions together to help us reflect on the first half of 2020 and to get in the right headspace moving forward.

Feel free to save it, screenshot it, and share it on your social media!

Here are my answers!

  1. Highlights of 2020

    • Meeting Julian Casablancas

    • Getting a new tattoo to cover my back scars

    • Producing 3 awesome videos including She Was a Rainbow and Dear Younger Me

    • Finally being honest to my family about some of the things I have been struggling with

    • Finally going to therapy

    • Finally dying my hair rose gold

    • Turning 31

    • Getting closer to my old friends in Indonesia

  2. What I’ve let go and unlearned

    • The illusion that everyone has the best intentions towards me

    • That an ideal life has to include being married with kids, a house, having a good career, and being famous

    • The idea that the ultimate way for me to express myself creatively is to be working in Hollywood

    • The belief that just because somebody doesn’t live their life the way I do, or believe what I believe, doesn’t mean they’re not capable of being a good person

    3. What I want to cultivate going forward

    • Relationship with God (through daily devotion, meditation, bible study)

    • My self-love routine (through meditation, journaling, therapy, eating well)

    • Relationship with my family (through communication, trust, gentleness)

    • Friendship with my friends here in Dallas (through communication and quality time)

    • Friendship with my friends in Indo (through communication and quality time)

    • Friendship with some of my readers/audience/followers (through conversations)

    • My love for inspiring others and expressing myself through various creative outlets (I am not going to limit myself to just one thing)

    • The belief that I am enough

    • My personal savings

I don’t know what’s in store for the rest of 2020, all I know is most of the things that are gonna go down in the world are out of my control. So I am choosing today to get in the right headspace. One filled with courage, peace, and joy, where I am honest to myself and others.

If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that life is in the NOW. It’s not in “someday”, when you have finally matured as a person or when you finally have enough money and fame.

All the love and goodness in you — the world needs it NOW.

And you can share it NOW.

There’s always something good we can do. NOW.

Cheers to the second half of 2020!
